Bathroom Fan Installation in Ottawa

bathroom fan installation

A bathroom fan is a mechanical ventilation unit that exhausts interior air to the outside via a flexible tube or material duct. It’s not only smart to mount one, but numerous building codes today want it for new engineering or when significant bathroom remodeling will be underway. A bathroom fan installation will help collect humidity and smells in the bathroom, improving the quality of air.

Bathroom fans can be installed vertically on the walls or horizontally in the ceiling. A bathroom fan should be vented directly to the outside whenever practicable. Ductwork going through attic areas should be insulated, especially in cold environments, due to a chance of condensation inside of the duct. A bathroom fan should not be permitted to exhaust into an attic space. A damper should be installed at the point of exhaust to prevent back-drafting. The area around the fan should get sealed to avoid air infiltration.

A bathroom fan should not be connected to a plumbing vent because there is a possibility of sewer gas backflow. A bathroom fan should get installed in a ceiling between insulated and uninsulated space. Ensure that the vent is well-flashed and adequately sealed. Installing ductwork with the least crimps and turns will maximize the effectiveness of the fan. Do not wrap the duct over beams as this can build up water in the low points and create a breeding ground for mold and bacteria.

How Long Does it Take?

The typical installation of a new bathroom fan can take from 3-5 hours, depending on a few factors; the ceiling above, access to run a new switch if needed, how venting will get handled.

Tips for Bathroom Fan Installation

It’s best to install the bathroom fan where the most moisture builds up, such as above the sink or near the shower. In an open bathroom, place the vent fan equally between the shower/tub and toilet area. In a tiny bathroom, centering the fan in the room is excellent. When a toilet gets located in a subsequent enclosure with a door, you may want a second vent fan. Make sure that the vent louver is working so that it closes when the fan is not in use.

It helps against cold air re-entering the house from outside. The duct gets insulated around the hose that leads from the fan housing to the outdoor louvered cap. It will help reduce the loss of heat to the outdoors. Do not seal the gap under the bathroom door. The air gets dispelled by the fan and should get replaced with fresh air. If the bathroom has tall ceilings, you may need a more powerful fan.

Purpose of Installing a Bathroom Fan

Warm, humid weather is an ideal environment for mold, mildew, and microorganism growth. High moisture in rooms can breakdown interior room materials such as wallboard also, wall paint, and trim, not to mention the doors. If your bathroom does not have a fan and it smells musty, its advisable to set one up and check if serious mold growth hasn’t already begun. For a safe, healthy bathroom, present ventilation. The essential function of a bathroom vent fan is to dispel moist, warm air, created from the use of a bathtub or shower. Without a fan, bathrooms are susceptible to excessive moisture accumulation that escalates the chances of detrimental bathroom walls, surfaces, and ceilings, as well as bathroom fixtures.
