First off let’s talk about knob and tube wiring. If your home was built in the early 1940’s or earlier, there’s a high chance your home has single conductor wiring with ceramic insulators protecting it. You may be able to see this in your basement if the ceiling is unfinished. This type of wiring is very delicate and should not be tampered with. The cloth sheath has most likely become brittle over time. This wiring system also does not have a ground, which can cause a problem for most modern amenities we have in our home today.

Ungrounded wiring came into effect after knob and tube, between the 1940’s and 1960’s. This wiring system closely resembles what we have today except for 1 key ingredient. Yes, the ground again. The conductors are bound together in paper and cloth which protects it much better than its predecessor. This type of wiring leaves us with some other options of protecting our home, although none are a perfect fix like doing a complete rewire.
