Among the primary questions I ask a possible client is why they wish to upgrade their electrical panel?
A common response to this is to replace an old fuse panel. Outdated fuse panels while inertly safe can have many problems. Firstly the ability to add any circuits to your panel. Fuses that trip will have to be replaced, unlike resetting a breaker. It’s hard to tell which fuse has tripped when this does happen. Fuse panels can be prone to overloading as well, with higher amperage fuses placed on undersized wiring.
Some homeowners may want to upgrade from 100 amps to 200 amps. New electrical code starting January 2019 states that new dwellings shall have 200 amp services. Our electrical demands on our homes has greatly expanded over the years. From hot tubs to electric vehicles. By code most homes can not even support a hot tub without upgrading to a bigger electrical service. Its important to talk to our electricians about potential added circuits in the future.
Thirdly, sometimes upgrades may be required from an insurer. Often times they charge a premium for homes with out dated provisions. Talk with your insurance agency to see if upgrading an old fuse box may save you money.
These are just some of the reasons you may want to upgrade your electrical panel. If you’re thinking about, or have concerns, give us a call.
